KAFEIN – MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER & WASTE TREATMENT FOR FERTIGATION IN INDONESIA

Our field studies from Central Java in early 2017 unfortunately showed that numerous residents of Semarang use the river, mangrove plantation, and other public spaces near the water as toilets. This habit has been established for decades and endangers both the health of the residents and the environment.

Through our project, we aim to introduce a model of sanitation facilities and build it in Tambak Lorok (Semarang). A wastewater and waste treatment system will be integrated. In addition, the conversion of the resulting fecal matter into end products such as fertilizer and biogas is targeted. We are convinced that people need a visual model in order to adopt this technology and change their mindset regarding fecal disposal. Furthermore, residents’ knowledge of health and hygiene will be strengthened. The people in our target group should understand the technology behind the sanitation facility in order to operate and maintain it properly.

The end products will be managed on-site by the participating residents with the support of LPUBTN and BUGI. This way, in addition to aspects of hygiene and environmental protection, the development of the community will be promoted by improving their financial situation.
