KAFEIN – MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER & WASTE TREATMENT FOR FERTIGATION IN INDONESIA

Desa Kerirea is a hidden holiday paradise on Flores in Indonesia. At present, tourism activities in Kerirea are dominated by local and regional visitors. Since Labuan Bajo was designated in 2019 by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism as one of the ten top priority tourist destinations, visitor numbers to Flores have been rising rapidly. Our project aims to raise awareness among the local population about the tourism boom and to equip them with adequate know-how.

Together with the local community, we want to prepare Kerirea as an ecotourism destination. The key prerequisites for this are the preservation of natural resources, a functioning waste management system, and a sustainable agricultural system. The installation of sanitation facilities with a bioreactor is necessary as a learning tool for the local population to introduce the concept of “Waste to Energy” in the form of fertilizer and biogas production.

Through this project, we want to involve key stakeholders in the design of a sustainable ecotourism initiative and work together with them. In this project, the local community should play a central role. They should be made aware of the upcoming changes in their daily lives related to mass tourism. In addition, they will be supported by us, BUGI and Yayasan DAN, to design and implement income-generating projects and to be able to carry them out independently in the long term. The establishment of start-ups is not the aim here. This is merely about the preliminary stage of start-ups for the initiation and incubation of ideas. This project component is crucial for promoting the economic development of the local population in harmony with the preservation of natural resources.

Project Goals

Problem:

  1. Water scarcity for agriculture during the dry season, even though water sources are available within 1 km of farmland.

  2. Fertilizer shortage for agriculture. In general, it is difficult to obtain affordable fertilizer in Flores. The government-subsidized fertilizer unfortunately does not reach the farmers in Kerirea, so they have to pay higher prices for fertilizer.

Approach:

  1. For the water problem
    Water supply
➡️ Water reservoirs in the broadest sense and in various locations
➡️ Diverting water from water sources
    ➡️ Groundwater
➡️ Treated water from the grey-water treatment system of the sanitation facilities

Water use optimization
➡️ Drip irrigation
➡️ Other water recycling systems if drip irrigation is not feasible

  1. For the fertilizer problem
Fertilizer production with the sanitation facilities. Fertilizer can be produced from various raw materials: human feces, livestock manure, and organic waste (compost).
